Accessibility

What we have done to make Education Times usable, and how to tell us where we have fallen short.

What we aim for

We build towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard, not a claim of perfection: some things will be wrong, and we would rather hear about them than not.

What this site does

  • Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, and the focus indicator is visible rather than removed.
  • There is a skip link to the main content as the first item in the tab order.
  • Colour is never the only way information is conveyed, and text meets the contrast ratios the guidelines require.
  • Animation respects the operating system's reduce motion setting, and stops when that setting is on.
  • Images that carry meaning have text alternatives. Decorative artwork is marked so screen readers skip it rather than reading a filename.
  • The page works at 200 percent zoom and on a narrow screen without horizontal scrolling.

Where we know we fall short

Audio streams on our radio sites do not currently carry transcripts. Live radio is difficult to caption and we are not going to pretend otherwise, but recorded programmes should carry transcripts and that is what we are working towards.

Tell us

If something on this site is not usable for you, tell us through the contact page and describe what happened. Include the page and the assistive technology you were using if you can. We will reply and we will tell you honestly whether and when we can fix it.
